Good things happening in New Bedford! (hopefully)

I am looking forward to getting outside as soon as possible. After the long winter and for what seems like an infinate amount of rainy days I cannot wait to get some fresh air!

So I figure what is better then just being outside….Yoga outside!!! I have contacted a few people and I hope to start an outside class once the weather gets good in New Bedford! so in order to keep everyone up to date, please sign up for my email list that I posted a link to on the right side of this blog!

Also, after I return from my Costa Rica yoga retreat (super stoked about!) I will be adding an additional class at Synergy in Fairhaven, i will be keeping everyone posted about the day and time. Here is a little glimpse of our soon to be paradise for a week.

New Class!

New Yoga Series!

Benefits…for runners (or joggers, or walkers)

In the world of running, there are many different levels that you can consider yourself to be in. Marathoner, 10k runner, jogger, walk/jogger, or even if you just like to walk, yoga offers benefits that can improve many aspects of your routines.

Stamina. What better way to be able to improve your run with more cardiovascular endurance and having better breath control. Yoga has many different breathing techniques/exercises that are used in your practice that increase your ability  to breath better.

Strength. There are different types of yoga and I encourage everyone to try a couple of different types to find one that you like the best. For a runner, a  style close to vinyasa or ashtanga might be the one that is a good fit for you. These styles use fluid movement and can include more challenging poses, that people who are looking for a fitness challenge might enjoy. Try doing a nice, slooooow chattarunga and hold a boat pose and see your strength in your arms and abs improve.

Here is just a short list of benefits. I’ve found that keeping these posts shorter, encourages readers to read the whole thing! So I will follow up with more benefits for runner at another time. Until then, namaste.

Coming Soon…

New blog post coming soon. Promise. Wedding got me a bit distracted!

How hot is too hot?

Doing yoga in a heated spot can be beneficial for many reasons, but how hot is too hot? And when it is about 120 degrees, what’s the socially accepted way of asking someone to stop dripping their sweat on you?

Yesterday Mallory and I went to the Baptiste Power Institute in Brookline for a 90 min hot power yoga class. We were told it would be anywhere from 90-100 degrees, which we were totally okay with and prepared for. I think they maybe forgot it was already 90 outside and there was no reason to heat up a room with 30 people in it, mats touching, and the sun shinning in. So the beginning of the class was awesome, I was feeling really great, then it just got way too hot for us, and most others in the class. Now don’t get me wrong, I would love to do it again, but just not on a hot day.

So why would anyone want to put themselves through this? Well there are many benefits to adding heat to your yoga practice; here is a list of  a few:

  • Your body burns fat more effectively, fat may be redistributed and burned as energy during the class.
  • The heat produces a fluid-like stretch allowing for greater range of movement in joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body
  • Capillaries dilate in the heat; more effectively oxygenating the tissues, muscles, glands and organs and helping in the removal of waste products
  • Your metabolism speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids
  • You benefit from a strengthening of willpower, self-control, concentration and determination in this challenging environment

After the class was over, we left, completely soaked, and headed over to Grasshopper. DELICIOUS! Next post I’ll talk more about that though.  Next time I will be sure to drink WAAAY more water before AND after class.

On another note, another sunset yoga class is happening Sept 16th at 5:45 at Horseneck!

Sunday Funday

Baptiste Power Yoga Institute and Grasshoppers for dinner! Details to be blogged about later!
